Luxury and 5-Star Hotels in Sofia: The 11 I'd Book
Sofia's luxury hotels come with history in the building. One has a 4th-century church in its courtyard and another a Roman amphitheatre in its basement. A typical five-star night costs about €160. These are the 11 I'd book: seven five-star and luxury hotels in the centre and four boutique hotels a step below them, with what each one sits next to, its spa or rooftop, and what a night cost when I checked.

Scores are out of 10 from Booking guests. Prices are Booking's "from" rate for two adults for one night in early November 2026, converted from pounds at £1 = €1.19983. "Not seen" means no live score or price came up for that hotel when I looked.
What a five-star hotel in Sofia costs
These are Booking's averages for Sofia on 2 November 2026, in euros, Bulgaria's currency since 1 January 2026, at the same rate. The typical five-star night of about €160 is £133 back home.
| Hotel class | Typical night | The coming weekend | Booked for tonight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-star | about €101 | about €126 | about €131 |
| Five-star | about €160 | about €168 | about €221 |
The step up from a 4-star to a five-star is about €59 on a typical night and about €90 when you book on the day. Weekends barely move the five-star price: a weekend night averaged about €8 more than a typical one, against €25 more at a 4-star.
On a luxury weekend the room takes most of the money, because the rest of Sofia's prices stay low: a metro ride costs €0.80 and a local beer about €2.
The best five-star and luxury hotels in Sofia
Three of these seven call themselves five-star on their own websites: Grand Hotel Sofia, Arena di Serdica and the Grand Hotel Millennium. All seven are in the centre.
Sofia Balkan Palace

If I had one night to splash out in Sofia, I'd spend it at Sofia Balkan Palace. Built in 1956 and formerly the Sofia Hotel Balkan, it stands at 5 Sveta Nedelya Square, a couple of minutes from Serdika metro. Its block wraps around a courtyard it shares with the Presidency, and in that courtyard stands the Rotunda of St George, a 4th-century red-brick church and the oldest standing building in Sofia.
The restaurant is Labels, and the lobby bar, Basilica, has a conservatory that works as a winter garden in the cold months. The rooms go up to the Presidential Suite. With 10,152 guest reviews on Booking and a score of 8.6, it's the most reviewed hotel I looked at. I'd book it for an anniversary, and pick the Hyatt or the Millennium if a spa is the point of the trip.
InterContinental Sofia

The InterContinental is the room with the view. It faces the parliament across Narodno Sabranie Square, a few minutes' walk from Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and rooms on the cathedral side look at the gold domes. Book the club level and you get the Club Lounge too.
It was from about €196 a night when I checked. That's the highest live price on this list, and guests scored it 9.0 from 1,443 reviews. I'd book it for a first visit with someone who will spend the trip photographing domes.
Grand Hotel Sofia

Grand Hotel Sofia describes itself as a deluxe five-star, and it has stood at 1 Gurko Street in the centre since 2004. Rooms run from Superior up to the Grand Suite. It has the Shades of Red restaurant, the Grand Café, a lobby bar and a health centre.
This is the five-star I'd suggest for parents or a work trip, when you want a classic hotel in the middle of town and dinner at Shades of Red is the evening plan.
Hyatt Regency Sofia

The Hyatt Regency on Vasil Levski Square opened in 2020, and it's my pick for a spa weekend on the cathedral side of town. It has a spa and a pool. Ask for a room with views of Vitosha mountain.
The Scene, its bar on the 7th floor, is where I go for cocktails, and the view runs across the centre to the mountain with Alexander Nevsky in the frame. Booking guests scored the hotel 8.9 from 1,886 reviews.
Arena di Serdica

Arena di Serdica is the five-star with a Roman arena inside it. Builders found the Amphitheatre of Serdica in 2004 while putting the hotel up, and its remains are on show in the basement. The hotel also has La Tribuna restaurant and garden, a lobby bar and the Arena di Serdica Wellness Club.
I'd book it for anyone who reads every sign in a museum, because the rest of Roman Serdica is a short walk away: parts of six Roman streets lie open around Serdika metro.
Sense Hotel Sofia

The Sense, at 16 Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, is my pick for a romantic weekend. Its bar on the 9th floor looks straight at the domes of Alexander Nevsky, and the glass panels slide back in warm weather. The roof opens at 10am every day and closes at 2am from Wednesday to Saturday and at 1am from Sunday to Tuesday.
Below it there's a gastro bar and the Sense Wellness spa, and the rooms run from Superior to suites, with a Superior Accessible room on the list. I rate that roof the best of the rooftop bars in Sofia, and guests only have to take the lift.
Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia

The Grand Hotel Millennium is the big one. It's a five-star tower of 30 storeys at 89B Vitosha Boulevard, with 400 rooms and a 6-storey atrium. The spa and wellness centre covers 3,500 m², the fitness centre another 1,500 m², and there's a heated pool. Ozone Skybar & Lounge sits on the 29th floor under roofs that open in good weather, and a lounge on the 30th floor has a 360-degree view of the city.
For dinner there's Spectrum, Mediterra, the Vienna Café and The Gallery Fine Dining. NDK station on M2 is the nearest metro, and the National Palace of Culture and its fountains are on the doorstep.
Guests scored it 9.2 from 4,273 reviews, the best score I saw among these seven. The tower also has 14 conference rooms for up to 2,000 people, so check for a big event before you book a quiet weekend.
Luxury boutique hotels in Sofia
Below the big names, a boutique room with a guest score above 9 costs about €123 to €146 a night. Sentro and Adella, both on my list of boutique hotels in Sofia, out-scored every big hotel above that showed a Booking score.
Les Fleurs Boutique Hotel

Les Fleurs has 31 rooms on Vitosha Boulevard, and the designer Francesco Lucchese planned it around flowers: every room has its own layout and its own flower motif. It's the hotel I'd book for a couple who want to step out of the front door onto the city's main street. No live price came up for it when I checked.
Sentro Boutique Hotel

Sentro had the highest guest score of any hotel I looked at in Sofia, 9.6 from 1,871 reviews, and a room was from about €123 a night. It's on Solunska Street, a few steps off Vitosha Boulevard, with a garden, a terrace and a 24-hour reception. It's listed as a 3-star, and it cost about €37 less than a typical five-star night. Private parking costs extra and has to be reserved with the room.
Adella Boutique Hotel

Adella is the one to book with a hire car. Parking is free and secured. It has 50 rooms, opened in 2018 and runs an Italian restaurant, Adella Ristorante. Guests scored it 9.5 from 3,170 reviews, and it was from about €128 a night. It's out of the centre in Dianabad, so I'd drive or take a taxi into town.
VIKO Boutique Apart Hotel

VIKO has 23 apartments in the centre, which makes it my luxury pick for a family or a group of friends who want more space than a hotel room. Guests scored it 9.1 from 439 reviews, and it was from about €146 a night, about €14 under a typical five-star.
Luxury hotels outside the centre
A few of Sofia's big hotels sit outside the centre. They suit a work trip or a car, and on a two-night city break I'd still stay in town.
| Hotel | Area | Getting to the centre | Book it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hilton Sofia | By South Park | About 15 minutes by car | Park walks and Vitosha views |
| Maison Sofia MGallery | Lozenets | European Union metro on M2 | Restaurants and quiet streets |
| Blue Star Luxury Hotel | Lozenets | European Union metro on M2 | A lower price, from about €102 |
| Crowne Plaza Sofia | Mladost | M1 metro | Work trips and the Sky Bonsai roof bar |
| Metropolitan Hotel Sofia | Mladost | M1 metro | Work trips, from about €119 |
| All Seasons Residence Design Hotel | Boyana | Car or taxi | Hiking, from about €95 |
Hilton Sofia is beside South Park, one of my favourite parks in Sofia for a morning run, and has views of Vitosha. All Seasons Residence sits in Boyana at the foot of the mountain, about three minutes' walk from Boyana Church and its 13th-century frescoes, and every trip into town from there is a bus, a taxi or a drive.
Which luxury hotel in Sofia suits your trip
| Your trip | Book | For |
|---|---|---|
| A first visit | Sofia Balkan Palace or the InterContinental | A short walk to the cathedral, the Roman streets and Vitosha Boulevard |
| A romantic weekend | Sense Hotel or Les Fleurs | The rooftop over the domes, or a flower-themed room on the boulevard |
| A spa weekend | Grand Hotel Millennium or Hyatt Regency | The 3,500 m² spa at the Millennium, a spa and pool at the Hyatt |
| Roman history | Arena di Serdica | The amphitheatre under the same roof |
| A road trip | Adella Boutique Hotel | Free secured parking |
For a first weekend in Sofia, I'd stay between Serdika and NDK. That stretch is the best area to stay in Sofia for walking to the sights, and most of the mid-range hotels in Sofia I'd book are there too.
Getting from the airport to your hotel
The M4 metro runs from Terminal 2 to Serdika in about 20 minutes, and a single ticket on the Sofia metro costs €0.80 with a contactless tap at the barrier. From Serdika, Sofia Balkan Palace and Arena di Serdica are a short walk, and for the Millennium you change to M2 for NDK.
Bus 84 does the airport to the city centre run for the same €0.80, in 35 to 45 minutes. After the last train it's a taxi, and from 10pm the meter runs on the night tariff, a little above the day fare.
Key takeaways
- Book early: a five-star booked for the same night cost about €221 on Booking, the dearest rate in my price table.
- Stay at Sofia Balkan Palace for the address, the Millennium or the Hyatt for a spa, and the Sense for the rooftop.
- Arena di Serdica is the five-star for Roman history, with the amphitheatre in its basement.
- Sentro, Adella and VIKO cost about €123 to €146 a night, with guest scores above 9.
