The Best Viewpoints in Sofia: 8 Places With a View
Sofia sits flat in a wide basin with Vitosha rising straight off its southern edge, so you either look down on the city from the mountain or up at the mountain from the city. These are the eight viewpoints I take visiting friends to, from a rocky peak at 1,862 metres to a 29th-floor bar, with how to get up to each one, what it costs and the hour I'd go.
Sofia's best viewpoints at a glance
Three of my eight are up on Vitosha, two are free spots at the bottom of Vitosha Boulevard and three are hotel rooftop bars in town. The mountain views cost a bus fare or a taxi, and the rooftops cost a drink.

| Kopitoto | Peak with a TV tower | 1,345 m | Taxi fare | Taxi or car | After dark |
| NDK park | City square | Street level | Free | NDK (M2) or NDK II (M3) metro | Sunset |

The best viewpoints on Vitosha
Every view from the northern slopes of Vitosha looks straight down on Sofia. The mountain has been a nature park since 1934, the oldest in the Balkans, and my three viewpoints up there are a city bus or a taxi ride from the centre.
Kamen Del: my favourite view of Sofia
Kamen Del (Камен дел) is the one I'd pick if you only had time for one. It's a 1,862-metre peak of andesite boulders on the northern side of Vitosha, and it faces the city head on. From the top, Sofia spreads out from Pancharevo Lake in the east to the Gorna Banya quarter in the west.

Getting there takes one bus and an easy walk. Bus 66 runs from Vitosha metro station to Aleko, the hut and ski area at 1,810 metres, and from there the path to the summit takes me about an hour. It's about 7 km there and back with around 150 metres of climbing, so it's the walk I give friends who want a summit without signing up for one of the longer day hikes near Sofia.
Cherni Vrah, the top of Vitosha
Cherni Vrah is Vitosha's summit, 2,290 metres up. From the same bus stop at Aleko it's 3 km and about 480 metres of climbing, which takes me 1.5 to 2 hours. A weather station has stood on the top since 1935, and the cafe up there is known for its bean soup, which I always have before the walk down.

I pick Cherni Vrah for height and Kamen Del for the city. The summit sits further back in the massif, so Sofia looks smaller from up there. The top is also often in cloud while the city sits in sunshine.
Kopitoto, for the city lights at night
Kopitoto (Копитото) means "the hoof", after the shape of the peak you can pick out from almost anywhere in Sofia. The TV tower on top went up in 1985 at 1,345 metres, right above the city, and the Kopitoto hotel stands beside it.

This is my night viewpoint. I go up by taxi from the centre after dinner and look down on the city's lights spread across the plain. From 1962 until the early 1990s, Bulgaria's first cable car climbed the 600 metres up from Knyazhevo. By day, Boyana Church sits in the quarter below, so a morning at the church and an afternoon up here fit together.
Free viewpoints in the city centre
Both of these sit side by side at the southern end of Vitosha Boulevard, and both face the mountain.
NDK and the bottom of Vitosha Boulevard
Walk south down Vitosha Boulevard on a clear evening and the mountain it's named after fills the end of the street. Near the bottom you reach the park in front of the National Palace of Culture, the 123,000-square-metre congress centre that opened on 31 March 1981. From the benches by the fountains you get NDK in the foreground and Vitosha rising behind it.

Entry is free, and NDK (M2) and NDK II (M3) are the metro stops. I'd rather walk down, setting off from the top of the boulevard an hour before sunset with a coffee stop on the car-free stretch, so I reach the fountains as the light turns gold on Vitosha.
South Park
South Park (Южен парк) joins on to the NDK park and carries on south as a long run of lawns and trees pointing at the mountain. Of all the parks in Sofia, it's the one I pick for a sunset, because it's quieter than Borisova Gradina and the open grass faces Vitosha.

I sit on the grass and watch Vitosha turn pink beyond the tower blocks. With the NDK park next door, the two make one free evening walk from the bottom of the boulevard.
Rooftop bars with a view of Sofia
Three of the hotel rooftop bars in Sofia earn a place here for the view itself. One looks at the cathedral domes, one across the centre to the mountain and one at the city from 29 floors up.
Sense Rooftop Bar

For a sunset in the centre, I go to Sense. Its bar is on the 9th floor of the Sense Hotel at 16 Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, with the gold domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral just across the rooftops, and the glass panels slide back when the weather's good.
Doors open at 10am daily, so even the 4.55pm December sunset works, and it stays open until 1am from Sunday to Tuesday and 2am from Wednesday to Saturday. From 6pm it's smart casual, which means no shorts, sportswear or flip-flops. The nearest metro stop is Sofia University (M1, M4).
The Scene Rooftop Bar & Terrace

Up on the 7th floor of the Hyatt Regency on Vasil Levski Square, The Scene has been pouring since 2020. It's the rooftop that gets the cathedral and the mountain in one look, with Alexander Nevsky in the frame and Vitosha beyond the centre. It runs seasonal hours and keeps indoor seating through the winter. I come here when I care about the cocktail as much as the view, and I book for Friday and Saturday nights.
Ozone Skybar & Lounge

Ozone takes you up to the 29th floor of the Grand Hotel Millennium at 89B Vitosha Boulevard, next to NDK. Its two terraces have roofs that open in good weather, and from that height Sofia fills its basin with mountains all round. Opening time is 6pm from Monday to Thursday and 11am from Friday to Sunday, and it closes at 2am every night.
Cocktails cost €12 to €28, and the house rule is cocktail attire. I always book, on +359 883 253 600, and I go after dark, when the streets below are lit up.
How to get up Vitosha for the view
In 2026 the way up is bus 66. It starts at Sofia Zoo, calls at Vitosha metro station on M2 by Paradise Center and climbs to Aleko at 1,810 metres. Since 15 February 2025 it has run right up to the Aleko hut, with a request stop at Hotel Moreni just below.
It's an ordinary city bus, so a ride costs €0.80 with a tap of a contactless bank card on the validator. The same card stops charging at €2 a day across Sofia's buses, trams and metro, so a Vitosha day with metro rides at either end costs €2 at most.
| Months | Last bus down from the mountain | Sunset on the 15th |
|---|---|---|
| November to March | 5.45pm | 4.55pm to 6.30pm |
| April to October | 8pm | 6.45pm to 9.05pm |
Kopitoto I only do by taxi or car. On the meter of OK Supertrans, a typical Sofia firm, a ride costs €1.50 plus €0.75 a kilometre by day and €1.70 plus €0.85 a kilometre from 10pm to 6am, so a trip up there after 10pm costs a little more.
The best time for the Sofia panorama
Sunset is the hour I plan around, and the month decides where I watch it. In December the sun goes down before 5pm, and in June it's after 9pm. These are the local times for the 15th of each month, with Bulgaria two hours ahead of London all year.
| Month | Sunset | Where I'd watch it |
|---|---|---|
| January | 5.15pm | Sense |
| February | 5.55pm | Sense |
| March | 6.30pm | NDK and South Park |
| April | 8.05pm | NDK and South Park |
| May | 8.40pm | South Park |
| June | 9.05pm | South Park, then Ozone |
| July | 9.05pm | South Park, then Ozone |
| August | 8.30pm | South Park |
| September | 7.40pm | NDK and South Park |
| October | 6.45pm | The Scene |
| November | 5.05pm | Sense |
| December | 4.55pm | Sense |

On a winter trip to Sofia, the 4.55pm December sunset comes before Ozone opens at 6pm from Monday to Thursday, which is why Sense gets every winter row in my table. On days when I can't see the top of Vitosha from the centre, I skip the mountain and go to a rooftop, where the cathedral is close enough to see in any weather.
My viewpoint day in Sofia
When friends stay for a weekend in Sofia, this is the day I build around the views. In June it runs like this.
| Time | Where | How |
|---|---|---|
| 9.30am | Bus 66 from Vitosha metro to Aleko | €0.80 tap |
| 11am | Kamen Del and back | On foot, about 2 hours |
| 3pm | Bus 66 back down to Vitosha metro | €0.80 tap |
| 8pm | Vitosha Boulevard to NDK and South Park for the 9.05pm sunset | On foot |
| 10.30pm | A drink on the 29th floor at Ozone, or a taxi up to Kopitoto | On foot from NDK, or taxi |
In December I swap the evening around: Kamen Del in the morning and back on the bus by 2pm, Sense for the 4.55pm sunset, dinner, then Ozone after 6pm. Two of my favourite things to do in Sofia sit on this route: the sunset walk to NDK and South Park, and a walk on Vitosha.
Key takeaways
- Kamen Del, at 1,862 metres, is my pick for the best view of Sofia, an hour's walk from Aleko at the end of bus 66.
- Cherni Vrah adds height at 2,290 metres, and Kopitoto, by taxi, is the one for the city lights after dark.
- The park in front of NDK and South Park behind it are free, face Vitosha and work best at sunset.
- Sense is the rooftop for Alexander Nevsky's domes, and Ozone on the 29th floor has the widest view in the centre.
- The last bus down Vitosha is at 8pm from April to October and 5.45pm from November to March, so go up in the morning.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best view of Sofia?
Kamen Del on Vitosha has my favourite view, from 1,862 metres, taking in the city from Pancharevo Lake in the east to Gorna Banya in the west. It's an hour's walk from Aleko, the last stop of bus 66. In the centre, I go up to Ozone on the 29th floor of the Grand Hotel Millennium.
Can you see Vitosha from Sofia city centre?
Yes, on a clear day the mountain closes off the southern end of Vitosha Boulevard and rises behind NDK. South Park looks straight at it, and so do the terraces at The Scene and Ozone.
Which rooftop bar in Sofia has the best view?
For the cathedral, Sense: the domes of Alexander Nevsky sit just across the rooftops from its 9th-floor bar. For the widest view, Ozone looks out from the 29th floor over the city to the mountains around it.
Can you reach a Sofia viewpoint by public transport?
Yes, seven of my eight. Bus 66 runs from Vitosha metro station to Aleko for €0.80, and the paths to Kamen Del and Cherni Vrah start there. NDK, South Park, Sense and Ozone all have a metro stop nearby, you can walk from Sense to The Scene, and Kopitoto is the one I only do by taxi or car.
When is the best time for the Sofia panorama?
Sunset on a clear day, which falls at about 4.55pm in December and 9.05pm in June. For the Vitosha viewpoints, go in the morning, because the last bus down leaves at 5.45pm from November to March and 8pm from April to October.
Is there an observation deck in Sofia?
The nearest thing I know in the centre is Ozone's 29th-floor terraces, where a drink buys you the view. For the big views I go up Vitosha instead, to Kamen Del by bus and on foot or to Kopitoto by taxi.
