The Best Hostels in Sofia: My 7 Picks, From €5 a Night

The 7 hostels I would book in Sofia, social or quiet, with dorm and private prices and where each one sits.

A bed in Sofia costs less than a London sandwich: a dorm bunk a few steps from Serdika metro started at €5.16 a night when I checked on 2 November 2026. These are the 7 hostels and guesthouses I'd book, split into social, quiet and private, with the prices, the house rules, the streets they sit on and how to reach them from the airport.

Where the hostels in Sofia are

Sofia's hostels sit in a tight patch around Serdika, the station where the M1, M2 and M4 metro lines meet under the Roman ruins. Hostel N1, Key Hostel Serdika and Bla Bla Hostel are all within 0.4 km of the centre, and Hostel Mostel is 0.68 km out.

North-west of Serdika, the streets around the Women's Market, Zhenski Pazar (Женски пазар), are the cheap end of the centre, with hostels and budget hotels on the way to Lions' Bridge (Lavov Most) and the Central Railway Station. Banya Bashi Mosque and the hot mineral water taps are a few minutes from the market.

The second patch is south, in the side streets off Vitosha Boulevard, the pedestrian shopping street that runs from St Nedelya towards NDK with the mountain at the far end. Guest House 32 is 50 metres from it, and The Green Bar House B&B is on the boulevard itself, at number 55.

Elysia Homestay sits north of Dondukov Boulevard, and Green Cube Hostel is the furthest out, 1.11 km from the centre on Hristo Botev Boulevard. All 7 sit inside the walkable centre I'd pick as the best area to stay in Sofia for a first weekend.

The best social hostels in Sofia

Hostel Mostel

Photo: Google Maps

Hostel Mostel is the one I send solo friends to on a first trip. It has 11,699 reviews on Hostelworld, more than every other hostel in Sofia added together, and an 8.6 score. It fills a renovated 19th-century building about 5 minutes' walk from St Nedelya Church, with mixed dorms of 6 or 8 beds plus en-suite and double rooms.

The social side runs on movie, barbecue and bar nights, a pool table, a 42-inch TV and a wooden veranda. It also has lockers, key-card doors, a self-catering kitchen, a laundry with a dryer, hot water around the clock and free linen and towels. Dorm beds were from €6.90 and private rooms from €7.50.

The railway and bus stations are within walking distance, which helps on an early departure. Skip it if you want lights out at 10pm.

Bla Bla Hostel

Bla Bla Hostel is at 11 Iskar Street, 0.39 km from the centre. It sells two kinds of 4- and 6-bed dorm: budget ones, and premium ones with newly renovated toilets and doors that lock. There's a communal kitchen, a common room, a terrace, lockers in every room and weekly events for guests.

Guests must be 18 to 55. They scored the location 8.7 and cleanliness 7.0, for 7.5 overall from 563 reviews. At €13, its cheapest bed cost almost twice Hostel Mostel's. I'd book a premium dorm for the lock on the door, and look elsewhere on the tightest budget.

Key Hostel Serdika

Key Hostel Serdika is the most central bed on my list, 0.31 km from the centre on Knyaz Boris I Street. It sells itself on premium beds, mattresses and pillows, and the shared spaces run to a bar with a view, a video game room and a kitchen. A dorm bed was from €6.97 and a private room from €8.52. Check-in runs from 1pm to 10pm, with self check-in after that, and you pay on arrival in cash or by Revolut.

The score is the weak point: 6.7 from 208 reviews, the lowest of my 7, with cleanliness at 5.6. I'd book it when Mostel and N1 are full on a busy weekend, and read the latest reviews first.

The best quiet hostels in Sofia

Hostel N1

Photo: Google Maps

Hostel N1 lists itself as "NOT FOR YOU! Hostel N1, No Party & Many Rules", and the rules on its own site run to a long list. No alcohol, no drugs, no visitors, no children or pets, smoking on the balcony only, and quiet hours from 10pm to 9am. In return you get the best score of any dorm hostel in Sofia on Hostelworld, 9.1 from 1,477 reviews, and the cheapest bed I found, €5.16 a night.

It's a few steps from Serdika metro and the tram stops, near the Women's Market, about 15 minutes' walk from the train and bus stations. Rooms have 4 or 6 beds, as female-only or mixed dorms, at three levels. Basic skips the air conditioning and curtains, Standard adds air conditioning, heating and bed curtains, and Deluxe is soundproofed with a desk.

Linen, towels, the kitchen, tea and coffee are free, and the lounge has Netflix and a PS4. I'd pay for a Standard bed to get the curtain. Skip it if you want a beer with your dorm mates.

Green Cube Hostel

Photo: Google Maps

Green Cube Hostel is a capsule hostel, with 96 private capsules at 137 Hristo Botev Boulevard. Each pod has a soundproof curtain and its own lights and sockets, and every capsule room has air conditioning, heating and small wardrobes. You get in with a key card or a QR code on your phone. Linen, towels, tea and coffee are free, and there's an open-air terrace.

Guests scored security and staff 9.3 each, and atmosphere 6.0, so expect a quiet lounge. A pod was from €12.91, paid on arrival by cash or card. There's no breakfast. I'd book it for a sound night's sleep behind my own curtain.

The best guesthouses in Sofia for a private room

A private room in a small guesthouse costs less than some dorm beds: Guest House 32's cheapest room was €10, three euros under Bla Bla Hostel's cheapest bunk.

Elysia Homestay

Elysia Homestay has a perfect 10 from 104 Hostelworld reviews, with 10 in every category from cleanliness to value. It's at 8 Pop Bogomil Street in Kvartala, the old Jewish quarter between Dondukov, Maria Luiza, Vasil Levski and Slivnitsa boulevards, with galleries, restaurants and bars in the surrounding streets.

A private room was from €14. Check-in runs from 10am to 11pm, check-out is at noon, and there's parking, luggage storage, hot showers and a tea and coffee corner. I'd book it for a couple who want a quiet room near the centre. Solo travellers after company will find more of it at Hostel Mostel.

Guest House 32

Guest House 32 has 6 rooms, each decorated differently, at 32 Hristo Belchev Street, a back street off Vitosha Boulevard. The rooms share 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets, and there's a terrace and a winter garden, free tea and coffee at any hour and an Italian restaurant downstairs. A buffet breakfast costs €4 to €5.

Guests scored security and location a perfect 10, and 8.7 overall from 170 reviews. Reception works from 1pm to 9pm, so tell them if you land late, and card payments carry a 5% charge. I'd book it for a weekend of cafes and shopping, with NDK at the bottom of the boulevard.

Which Sofia hostel suits you

  • A first solo trip: Hostel Mostel. Its movie and bar nights are the easiest way I know to meet people in Sofia on your first evening.
  • A light sleeper: Hostel N1 for the quiet hours, or a Green Cube capsule.
  • A woman travelling alone: Hostel N1 is the only hostel on my list with female-only dorms, the first thing I'd look for on a solo female trip to Bulgaria.
  • A late arrival: Green Cube, or Key Hostel Serdika with its self check-in after 10pm.
  • A couple: Elysia Homestay or Guest House 32, with private rooms from €10 to €14.
  • Your own bathroom: an en-suite room at Hostel Mostel.
  • Travelling with children: not Hostel N1 or Bla Bla Hostel, which take adults only.

Hostel or cheap hotel: private rooms from €10

Below the hostels sits a row of B&Bs and budget hotels selling private rooms at hostel prices. These were listed for Sofia on Hostelworld on 2 November 2026.

The Green Bar House has 8 reviews and easyHotel 5, too few for the score to tell you much. Hello Sofia, 0.47 km from the centre, has 243.

For a proper hotel, AMAR Design Hotel near Banya Bashi, the cheapest of my favourite hotels in Sofia, was from about €66 a night for two people with a 9.0 guest score on Booking. Two Hostel N1 dorm beds come to €10.32, so the hotel costs a couple about €56 more a night.

Getting to your hostel from the airport

The M4 metro runs from Terminal 2 to Serdika in about 20 minutes, and the metro fare is €0.80, paid by tapping a contactless bank card at the barrier. Hostel N1 and Key Hostel Serdika are a few minutes' walk from the station. For Guest House 32 and the Vitosha Boulevard side, change at Serdika to the M2 towards Vitosha.

The first train leaves the airport at 5.21am on weekdays and the last at 11.38pm. After the last train, take a metered taxi in Sofia from the desk in arrivals, about €13 to €14 to the centre by day and a little more on the night tariff from 10pm, or ask Hostel N1 to book its airport car for €25 one way. Bus 84 does the airport to the city centre run too, for the same €0.80 as the metro.

Key takeaways

  • Book Hostel Mostel to meet people and Hostel N1 to sleep: Mostel runs bar nights, and N1 bans alcohol and visitors.
  • The cheapest beds, €5.16 to €6.97 a night, sit a short walk from Serdika, where the M4 from the airport stops.
  • Private guesthouse rooms start at €10 to €14, and AMAR Design Hotel, from about €66 for two, is the step up to a proper hotel.
  • Carry some cash: Hostel N1 takes euros at the desk, and Key Hostel Serdika takes cash or Revolut.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hostel in Sofia?

Hostel Mostel is the best hostel in Sofia for meeting people, with an 8.6 score from 11,699 reviews and dorm beds from €6.90. For sleep, Hostel N1 scores higher at 9.1 and enforces quiet hours from 10pm.

How much does a hostel in Sofia cost per night?

Dorm beds start at €5.16 to €13 a night on Hostelworld, depending on the hostel, and private rooms in hostels and guesthouses at €7.10 to €18.75. At those prices the bed is one of the smaller lines in what a Sofia weekend costs, next to food and drinks.

Is there a no-party hostel in Sofia?

Yes, Hostel N1 bans alcohol, drugs and visitors, and keeps quiet hours from 10pm to 9am. It sits a few steps from Serdika metro, with beds from €5.16.

Are there female-only dorms in Sofia?

Yes, Hostel N1 has female-only dorms with 4 or 6 beds, alongside its mixed rooms. None of my other picks lists a female-only dorm.

Can I pay by card at hostels in Sofia?

Mostly yes, but Hostel N1 takes cash in euros only at the desk, or card through Booking.com, and Key Hostel Serdika takes cash or Revolut. Green Cube takes cash or card on arrival, Elysia Homestay takes Visa and Mastercard, and Guest House 32 adds 5% for cards. Prices are in euros, Bulgaria's currency since 1 January 2026, so divide any leva price in an older review by 1.95583.

Is it safe to stay in a hostel near Serdika?

Yes, I'd happily stay there. Guests scored Bla Bla Hostel, 0.39 km from the centre, 8.2 for security, and Hostel Mostel and Green Cube open their doors with key cards. I keep my passport in a locker and take a metered taxi after midnight, the same two habits I'd give anyone asking if Sofia is safe.

Do Sofia hostels have kitchens?

Yes, Hostel Mostel, Hostel N1, Bla Bla Hostel and Key Hostel Serdika all have a kitchen for guests. With a dorm bed from €5 to €7 and the market stalls at Zhenski Pazar nearby, a budget weekend in Sofia comes down to what you spend on eating out.
