Where to Stay

The Best Hotels in Sofia: My 16 Picks at Every Budget

My 16 favourite hotels in Sofia at every budget, with the area, who each one suits and what a night cost.

Hotels are one of Sofia's best bargains. A 4-star in the city averages about €101 a night and a five-star about €160. These are the 16 hotels I'd book for a weekend in Sofia, from design rooms under €70 near Banya Bashi Mosque to the grand old addresses on the cathedral and parliament squares, with the area, who each one suits, when I'd skip it and what a night cost.

Scores are out of 10 from Booking guests. Prices are the lowest rate for two adults for one night that Booking showed me on 2 November 2026, converted from pounds at £1 = €1.19983. "Not seen" means no live score or price came up for that hotel when I looked.

Where the best hotels in Sofia are

Almost every hotel I'd book sits in a small, walkable centre. Around Sveta Nedelya Square and Serdika, where three metro lines meet, you're beside the Roman ruins and the airport train. Vitosha Boulevard runs south from there to NDK, lined with cafes and shops, with the mountain at the end of it.

The cathedral side of the centre, around Alexander Nevsky and Oborishte, is quieter and leafier, about 10 minutes' walk from the middle, with Sofia University station on M1. Lozenets, south of the centre at European Union station on M2, is residential and full of restaurants. The streets around the Women's Market and Lavov Most hold the cheap hotels and hostels, close to the railway station. For a first weekend, the best area to stay in Sofia is the centre between Serdika and NDK, because the cathedral, the Roman city and the boulevard are all a walk away.

The best luxury hotels in Sofia

Five of my seven favourite luxury hotels in Sofia come with something you'll remember: a 4th-century church in the courtyard, the parliament next door, a Roman amphitheatre inside, the cathedral domes from the roof or a bar 29 floors up.

Sofia Balkan Palace

The stone facade of Sofia Balkan Palace, with its arcaded top floors, on Sveta Nedelya Square under a blue sky
Photo: Google Maps

Sofia Balkan Palace is the hotel I'd book for a big birthday. Built in 1956 and formerly the Sofia Hotel Balkan, it stands at 5 Sveta Nedelya Square, a few minutes from Serdika metro. Its block wraps around a courtyard shared with the Presidency, and in that courtyard stands the Rotunda of St George, a 4th-century brick church and the oldest standing building in Sofia.

The restaurant is Labels and the lobby bar is Basilica. With more than 10,000 guest reviews, it's the most reviewed hotel I looked at, scoring 8.6. Skip it if you want a sleek modern bedroom, because the money goes on the 1956 building and the address.

InterContinental Sofia

Chevron marble floor, glass chandeliers and the reception desk in the lobby of InterContinental Sofia
Photo: Google Maps

InterContinental Sofia is my pick for a cathedral view from your room. It stands on Narodno Sabranie Square beside the parliament, a few minutes' walk from Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the rooms on that side look at the gold domes. It has a Club Lounge and scored 9.0 from 1,443 guest reviews.

At about €196 a night, it was the dearest live price I found for this list. I'd pass on it for a budget trip and book it for a first visit with someone who loves a view.

Grand Hotel Sofia

Photo: Google Maps

Grand Hotel Sofia calls itself a deluxe five-star, and it has stood at 1 Gurko Street in the centre since 2004. The rooms run from Superior up to the Grand Suite, and downstairs there's the Shades of Red restaurant, the Grand Café, a lobby bar and a health centre.

I'd book it for a parents' weekend or a work trip, when you want a classic five-star in the middle of town. For a drink with a view, the Sense and the Millennium have the rooftops.

Hyatt Regency Sofia

Pale stone facade of the Hyatt Regency Sofia with blue banners above its glass ground floor
Photo: Google Maps

The Hyatt Regency on Vasil Levski Square is the luxury hotel I'd book for a spa weekend. It has a spa and a pool, rooms with mountain views, and The Scene, the rooftop bar that opened with the hotel in 2020 and looks over the city to Vitosha and the domes of Alexander Nevsky.

Guests scored it 8.9 from 1,886 reviews. It sits on the cathedral side of the centre, so for a weekend spent on Vitosha Boulevard I'd stay further south.

Arena di Serdica

Roman amphitheatre walls on show beneath the balconied atrium of the Arena di Serdica hotel
Photo: Google Maps

Arena di Serdica is the only hotel I know with a Roman amphitheatre in the building. Builders found the remains of the Amphitheatre of Serdica in 2004 while putting the hotel up, and the ruins are on show inside, with visitors welcome.

It's a five-star with La Tribuna restaurant and garden, a lobby bar and a wellness club. I'd book it for anyone who loves ancient Serdica, because the excavated Roman streets around Serdika metro are a short walk away.

Sense Hotel Sofia

Photo: Google Maps

Sense Hotel, at 16 Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, is my romantic-weekend pick. Its rooftop bar looks straight at the gold domes of Alexander Nevsky. Downstairs there's a gastro bar and the Sense Wellness spa, and the room list includes a Superior Accessible room.

Staying here means the best of the rooftop bars in Sofia is a lift ride from your room. For a family trip I'd choose a hotel with a pool.

Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia

Indoor pool with a mosaic M logo, wooden loungers and a green plant wall at Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia
Photo: Google Maps

Grand Hotel Millennium is the big one. It's a 30-storey tower at 89B Vitosha Boulevard by NDK, with 400 rooms and suites, and a five-star on its own website. It has a 3,500 m² spa and wellness centre, a heated pool, Ozone Skybar on the 29th floor under a roof that opens, and a 30th-floor lounge with a 360-degree view of the city.

NDK station on M2 is the nearest metro, and the National Palace of Culture and its fountains are on the doorstep. Guests scored it 9.2 from 4,273 reviews. The tower also has conference rooms for up to 2,000 people, so check for a big event before you book.

The best mid-range hotels in Sofia

Mid-range in Sofia means a well-reviewed hotel in the centre for about €80 to €125 a night.

Design Hotel 36

Double bed beside a bare red brick wall lit by black spotlights in a guest room at Design Hotel 36
Photo: Google Maps

Design Hotel 36 is my favourite mid-range hotel for character. It's a small hotel in a building from 1922 at 36 Alexander Stamboliyski Boulevard, refurbished in 2017, with a curving staircase, caged industrial lamps and rough brick against smooth white walls. Serdika metro is about three blocks east, and there's a terrace for a morning coffee.

Guests scored it 8.8 from 954 reviews. There's no hotel car park, only paid public parking nearby, so if you're driving I'd book Via Serdika instead.

Sentro Boutique Hotel

Photo: Google Maps

Sentro Boutique Hotel had the highest guest score of any hotel I looked at, 9.6 from 1,871 reviews. It's in the centre, with air-conditioned rooms, a garden and a terrace, and it was from about €123 a night.

That price puts it between the mid-range and the luxury hotels. Of all the boutique hotels in Sofia, it's the one I'd book first for a couple on a sensible budget. Skip it if you want a spa or a pool, which the Millennium and the Hyatt have.

Art Hotel 158

Red and grey facade of Art Hotel 158 behind street trees, with lit Gallery, Rock Bar and Hotel signs
Photo: Google Maps

Art Hotel 158 is the mid-range hotel I'd book for a late landing, because the front desk works 24 hours. It's in the centre, with a restaurant, a shared lounge, a garden and a terrace.

Guests scored it 9.2 from 3,292 reviews, the same as the five-star Millennium, and a room was from about €91 a night, about €11 more than Via Serdika.

Hotel Via Serdika

Twin beds, armchairs by the balcony window and a patterned feature wall in a room at Hotel Via Serdika
Photo: Google Maps

Hotel Via Serdika is the one I suggest to friends arriving with a hire car, because it has private parking. It also has a fitness centre, a restaurant and a bar, and it scored 9.0 from 3,546 reviews.

It's about 1.5 km from Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, so budget 20 minutes on foot to the domes. A room was from about €80 a night, the lowest price I saw in this section.

The best cheap hotels in Sofia

Under €80 a night still buys a private room in the centre with a guest score of 9 or more. For a dorm bed, the best hostels in Sofia start at about €5 a night.

AMAR Design Hotel by HMG

Velvet sofa and armchair, a polished stone floor and gold slatted panels in the lobby of AMAR Design Hotel
Photo: Google Maps

AMAR Design Hotel is my budget pick, from about €66 a night with a 9.0 score from 3,305 reviews. It's listed in Oborishte and sits 600 metres from Banya Bashi Mosque, so the hot mineral springs beside the mosque and Serdika metro are a short walk.

There's a restaurant in the hotel, and the rate was about €14 a night under Via Serdika, my cheapest mid-range pick.

Agora Boutique Hotel

Photo: Google Maps

Agora Boutique Hotel is in the centre, 700 metres from the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, with city views from the rooms. Guests scored it 9.0 from 1,684 reviews, and it was from about €73 a night.

I'd book it for a couple on a budget who want a room with a view. If you're driving, Aurora or Via Serdika, both with private parking, make more sense.

Aurora Sofia Hotel

Photo: Google Maps

Aurora Sofia Hotel is a 3-star with a 9.2 guest score from 2,358 reviews, higher than Sofia Balkan Palace, the InterContinental or the Hyatt. It's in the centre, 1.5 km from Banya Bashi Mosque, with private parking, a garden, a terrace and a shared lounge, and it was from about €78 a night.

It's the hotel I'd book to spend the savings on dinner. Pick somewhere closer to Serdika if you only have one full day.

Hotels outside the centre: Boyana, Business Park and the airport

All Seasons Residence Design Hotel

Photo: Google Maps

All Seasons Residence Design Hotel sits in Boyana at the foot of Vitosha, about three minutes' walk from Boyana Church and its 13th-century frescoes. Guests scored it 9.0 from 539 reviews, and it was from about €95 a night.

I'd book it for a hiking weekend with a car, because the trails start above the village. Without a car, every trip into town is a bus or a taxi.

Premier Sofia Airport Hotel

Photo: Google Maps

Premier Sofia Airport Hotel is where I'd sleep before a dawn flight. It has an 8.4 score from 8,733 reviews, and Ibis Sofia Airport, at 7.8, is the other airport hotel. On any other night, I'd stay in town and ride the M4 out.

The rest of the hotels outside the centre fall into three areas:

AreaHotels I'd considerGetting to the centreBook it for
LozenetsMaison Sofia MGallery, Blue Star Luxury Hotel (from about €102)European Union metro on M2Restaurants and families
South ParkHilton SofiaAbout 15 minutes by carPark walks and Vitosha views
Business Park and MladostHoliday Inn, Crowne Plaza (9.4), B1 City Hotel (from about €94), Metropolitan (from about €119)M1 metro, or about 10 minutes by car from the Holiday InnWork trips

Business Park and Mladost are the business hotel districts. Fine for a conference. On a city break I'd swap them for the centre every time.

What a hotel in Sofia costs

Prices are in euros, Bulgaria's currency since 1 January 2026. These were Booking's averages for Sofia on 2 November 2026, converted from pounds at £1 = €1.19983.

HotelTypical nightThe coming weekendBooked for tonight
3-starabout €73 (£61)about €92 (£77)about €80 (£67)
4-starabout €101 (£84)about €126 (£105)about €131 (£109)
Five-starabout €160 (£133)about €168 (£140)about €221 (£184)

Booking a five-star for the same night cost about €61 more than a typical night, against about €7 more at a 3-star, so I book the big hotels well ahead. The room is the biggest line in a Sofia weekend budget by a distance: a metro ride is €0.80 and a local beer about €2.

Getting from the airport to your hotel

The M4 metro runs from Terminal 2 to Serdika in about 20 minutes, and a single costs €0.80 with a contactless tap at the barrier. Sofia Balkan Palace and Design Hotel 36 are a short walk from the station. For Vitosha Boulevard and the Millennium, change at Serdika to M2 for NDK.

Bus 84 also does the airport to the city centre run for the same €0.80, in 35 to 45 minutes. The last train leaves the airport at 11.38pm on weekdays. After that, a metered taxi in Sofia from the official desk in arrivals is the way in, at about €13 to €14 to the centre on the day tariff and a little more at night.

Key takeaways

  • For a first weekend, book within 10 minutes' walk of Serdika, where the airport metro stops and two other lines meet.
  • Sofia Balkan Palace is my luxury pick, Design Hotel 36 my mid-range pick and AMAR Design Hotel, from about €66, my budget pick.
  • A typical night costs about €73 in a 3-star, €101 in a 4-star and €160 in a five-star, with weekends dearer.
  • For a pool and a spa, book the Grand Hotel Millennium or the Hyatt Regency.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Sofia for a first visit?

The centre, between Serdika metro and NDK, is the best area for a first visit. You can walk to Alexander Nevsky, the Serdica excavations and the shops on Vitosha Boulevard, and the airport metro stops at Serdika.

How much does a hotel in Sofia cost per night?

A typical night costs about €73 in a 3-star, €101 in a 4-star and €160 in a five-star. Weekend nights cost more, about €92, €126 and €168. Well-rated central hotels such as AMAR Design Hotel and Agora Boutique Hotel start under €75.

Which hotels in Sofia have a swimming pool?

The Grand Hotel Millennium has a heated pool and a 3,500 m² spa, and the Hyatt Regency has a spa and a pool. Hotel Kitchen59 has a rooftop pool for summer. Without a hotel pool, the swimming pools in Sofia open to the public are the place for a swim.

Is there a hotel near Sofia Airport?

Yes, Premier Sofia Airport Hotel and Ibis Sofia Airport are the two airport hotels I'd look at. I'd only book one for a flight too early for the metro, since the first train from Serdika to the airport leaves at 5.08am on weekdays.

Which hotels are near Alexander Nevsky Cathedral?

The InterContinental on Narodno Sabranie Square is a few minutes' walk from the cathedral, with views of the domes from some rooms. The Sense Hotel on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard looks onto the domes from its rooftop bar, and the Hyatt Regency on Vasil Levski Square is on the same side of the centre.

Do I need a car if I stay in central Sofia?

No, a car is no help in the centre, where the sights are on foot and a metro ride costs €0.80. A car only pays its way at a hotel in Boyana or for day trips to the mountains.
