Live Music and Jazz in Sofia: Where I Go for a Gig
A lot of Sofia's live music happens underground. My go-to gig venue sits in the underpass in front of NDK, the jazz and alternative bars are a short walk away in the centre, and the folk music comes with dinner in a cellar. This is where I go to hear a band, which venue suits which night, how I check what's on and how I get home afterwards.
Where to hear live music in Sofia, night by night
Live music is the part of Sofia's nightlife that starts early: most bands are on stage by 9.30pm, hours before the clubs fill. Nearly everything I'd send you to is in the centre or under NDK, at the bottom of Vitosha Boulevard, so you can walk from dinner to the gig.
| Venue | Music | When there's music | Area |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sofia Live Club | Jazz, rock, pop, indie | Open nightly 7pm to 2am, bands start 8pm to 9.30pm | NDK underpass |
| Mixtape 5 | Metal, rock, punk, indie, rap | Gig nights, check the listings | NDK underpass |
| Stroeja | Alternative | Gig nights | Centre |
| Hadjidraganovite Izbi | Bulgarian folk with dinner | 8pm to 11pm, every night but Monday | Off Vitosha Boulevard |
| Hadjidraganovite Kashti | Bulgarian folk with dinner | 8pm to 11pm, every night but Tuesday | Near Lion's Bridge |
| Bulgaria Hall | Classical, the Sofia Philharmonic | Concert nights, mostly 7pm | Aksakov Street |
| Sofia Opera and Ballet | Opera, ballet, musicals | Evenings 7pm, Sunday matinees 4pm | Dondukov Boulevard |
| The Corner Piano Bar & Dinner | Live music and DJs | Music some nights, DJs at weekends | Lozenets |
| Maimunarnika | Hip hop, drum and bass, hard rock | Summer only | Borisova Garden |
On a Thursday or Friday I check the Sofia Live Club programme first, because it's the venue most likely to have a band I'd cross town for. If nothing grabs me, I book a table at Izbi, where the folk band plays every night except Monday, so there's no listing to check.
Gigs under NDK: Sofia Live Club and Mixtape 5
The National Palace of Culture, NDK to everyone in Sofia, is the huge concert and congress centre at the southern end of Vitosha Boulevard. Its big halls host concerts, and the gigs I go to most happen underneath it, in the sunken plaza and underpass by the fountains. Sofia Live Club and Mixtape 5 are both down there, so one trip covers two venues, and NDK has its own stop on metro line M2.

Sofia Live Club

Sofia Live Club is my favourite place in the city to hear a band. It holds 700 people, has been running since 2009 and opens every night from 7pm to 2am. Doors usually open between 7pm and 8pm and the music starts between 8pm and 9.30pm, so a gig here fits neatly between dinner and a late drink.
The programme mixes jazz with rock, pop, indie and bands touring from abroad. November 2026 has the Sofia Jazz Collective on Wednesday 11 November, The Italian Jazz Band on Saturday 14 November, Altın Gün on Thursday 26 November (doors 9pm, on stage at 10pm) and Kyoto Jazz Massive featuring Vanessa Freeman on Sunday 29 November. The Sofia Live Club programme lists the month ahead, and tickets sell through Eventim, Bilet.bg and Kupibileti.bg.
Mixtape 5

Mixtape 5 is the loud one. It has two main halls, so on a busy night it runs two gigs at the same time, and the line-up leans to metal, rock, punk, indie and rap, with the odd DJ night. It's where I send friends who want guitars. It's a gig venue first, so check the listings before you go: on a night without a band there's no reason to be there.
Jazz and alternative music in the centre
Zh Jazz Room

Zh Jazz Room is a small, low-lit bar in the Jewish quarter that calls itself a jazz venue, and the sound system lives up to it. There's a real fire, and I'd order a malt whisky with the truffle popcorn. It's my pick for jazz with a drink in hand on a night when there's no big concert on.
When I'd rather dance to jazz than sit and listen, I go to Bar Petak (Bar Friday), one of the clubs in Sofia open every night from 10pm to 6am. Its DJ nights move between funk, swing, jazz, reggae and drum and bass, and it puts on acoustic gigs as well.
Stroeja

Stroeja has put on alternative live music in the centre of Sofia for almost 30 years. It's where I'd go to hear a band I've never heard of, and it's the easiest gig to fold into a night of bars because you never leave the centre.
Bulgarian folk music with dinner
Folk music is the sound of the horo, Bulgaria's line dance, played on fiddles, flutes and the gaida, the Bulgarian bagpipe. Bagpipe playing in Bulgaria went onto UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2025. Its loud cousin is chalga, the pop-folk you'll hear in the clubs, which builds dance music on folk melodies with Greek, Serbian, Turkish, Romani and Arabic influences.

The easiest way to hear traditional folk in Sofia is over dinner in a mehana, a Bulgarian tavern, with a band in the corner. The two Hadjidraganov restaurants share owners and a name, and between them there's a band every night of the week.
Hadjidraganovite Izbi

Hadjidraganovite Izbi (Хаджидрагановите изби), Hadjidraganov's Cellars, is the one I book for friends on their first night. It's underground at 18 Hristo Belchev Street, on the corner with Solunska Street, a short walk off Vitosha Boulevard. The restaurant opens every day from 11.30am to 11.30pm, and a live folk band plays from 8pm to 11pm every evening except Monday.
The food is proper Bulgarian tavern cooking, good enough to put it on my list of the best restaurants in Sofia with or without the band. Book ahead for a Friday or Saturday, on 0898 775 936 or through its website.
Hadjidraganovite Kashti

Hadjidraganovite Kashti (Хаджидрагановите къщи), the Houses, sits north of the centre at 75 Kozloduy Street, by the junction with Maria Luiza Boulevard near Lion's Bridge. It keeps the same hours, 11.30am to 11.30pm every day, and its folk band plays from 8pm to 11pm every evening except Tuesday. Book on 0899 917 837.
I send people here when they're staying near the Central Station or the Women's Market, or when they're in Sofia on a Monday and the Izbi band has the night off.
Classical concerts and opera
Bulgaria Hall and the Sofia Philharmonic
The Sofia Philharmonic has played in the city for more than a century, and its home is Bulgaria Hall (зала „България“) at 1 Aksakov Street in the centre. The same complex has the smaller Bulgaria Chamber Hall, which takes the chamber concerts.

November 2026 has Karen Gomyo with Viliana Valtcheva on Thursday 5 November, a concert marking 100 years since the birth of the pianist Ventsislav Yankoff on Thursday 12 November, and Wild Symphony on Sunday 15 November at 5pm. Most concerts start at 7pm. Each one on the Sofia Philharmonic website has a link to buy tickets through Eventim.
Sofia Opera and Ballet
The Sofia Opera, at 30 Knyaz Aleksandar Dondukov Boulevard, puts on opera, ballet and musicals, and it's the classical night I'd pick if you only have one.

November 2026 includes La Traviata on 6 and 7 November, Giselle on 28 November and a new production of Handel's Agrippina on 27 and 29 November. Seats for La Traviata run from €20 to €60 depending on where you sit, and the Sofia Opera calendar sells tickets online.
Live music with a view
The Corner Piano Bar & Dinner

The Corner sits on the 8th floor of a business centre on the corner of Nikola Vaptsarov and Cherni Vrah boulevards in Lozenets. The long terrace looks over Loven Park and South Park to Vitosha. It opens from lunch until late, with live music on some nights and DJs at weekends.
It's my favourite of the rooftop bars in Sofia when a friend wants a band and a view in the same evening. Book ahead for weekends and band nights.
Further out in Mladost, Sky Bonsai, the rooftop bar of the Crowne Plaza at 111 Alexander Malinov Boulevard, adds live music to its DJ sets and theme nights from Tuesday to Saturday, 5pm to 1am. I'd only make that trip if you're staying out that way.
Summer gigs in Borisova Garden
Borisova Garden is the oldest and best-known park in Sofia. In summer it holds the only outdoor venue on this list.

Maimunarnika

Maimunarnika is a summer-only venue in Borisova Garden, with concerts that run from hip hop to drum and bass and hard rock. The stall at the entrance does Bulgarian classics like meatballs and shopska salad, so you can eat between sets. From autumn to spring there's nothing on, so save it for a summer trip.
How I check what's on in Sofia each week
I start with the venues' own programmes, then look on the ticket sites for anything touring, and I search each name in Latin letters and in Cyrillic, because Bulgarian listings use both.
| What you want | Where I check | Tickets or booking |
|---|---|---|
| Jazz or a touring band | sofialiveclub.com | Eventim, Bilet.bg, Kupibileti.bg |
| Rock and metal | Mixtape 5's own pages | As listed for each gig |
| Classical | sofiaphilharmonic.com | Eventim |
| Opera or ballet | operasofia.bg | Online on operasofia.bg |
| Folk with dinner | No listing needed | A table by phone |
If a name on the Sofia Live Club programme matters to you, buy the ticket before you fly.
Planning a gig night in Sofia
Here's how I'd pace two kinds of music night, one under NDK and one in a folk cellar.
| Time | Gig night at NDK | Folk night off Vitosha Boulevard |
|---|---|---|
| 7pm | Early dinner in the centre | A drink on Vitosha Boulevard |
| 8pm | Doors at Sofia Live Club | Seated at Izbi as the band starts |
| 9pm | Band on stage | Main courses and a rakia |
| 11pm | A late drink, or Mixtape 5 in the same underpass | The band finishes |
| Midnight | Last metro around now | Last metro around now |
On a two-night weekend in Sofia, I'd do the folk dinner on the Friday and save Saturday for a gig at Sofia Live Club, so the late night lands when you can sleep in.
Getting home after a gig
The Sofia metro runs from about 5am until around midnight, so it's the easy way to get to a gig and a poor way back from one. A single ticket is €0.80, and you can tap a bank card at the barriers.
After midnight your options are the night buses, lines N1 to N4, or a taxi. A 24-hour transport card that covers the night lines costs €3. OK Supertrans charges €1.70 to start and €0.85 per km between 10pm and 6am, so a 5 km ride home works out at about €6 on the meter. Uber doesn't run in Sofia, so I'd download TaxiMe before you go out.
Key takeaways
- Sofia Live Club under NDK is the venue to check first for jazz and touring bands, open every night from 7pm to 2am.
- Mixtape 5 and Stroeja cover rock, metal and alternative bands, and Zh Jazz Room is the small jazz bar I'd pick for a quieter night.
- Izbi and Kashti put a live folk band on with dinner from 8pm to 11pm, and between them cover every night of the week.
- Book gig tickets on Eventim, Bilet.bg or Kupibileti.bg, and budget about €6 for a 5 km taxi home, because the metro stops around midnight.
